Is It Acne Or Pityrosporum Folliculitis?
Is It Acne Or Pityrosporum Folliculitis?
Pityrosporum folliculitis is commonly mistaken as acne (even by dermatologists). Pityrosporum folliculitis is a condition where pityrosporum, a yeast, infects the hair follicles and multiplies—creating an acne-like eruption. It’s imperative not to mistaken the two because the treatments are different. For instance, while antibiotics are commonly used to treat acne, it can have the reversed effect on folliculitis. Here are some signs to help you figure out if you are in fact dealing with folliculitis instead of acne.
Color of blemishes
If your bumps are more of your skin color, chances are you’re dealing with follucilits.
Itchy Skin
Are your bumps gitchy? Acne is generally not itchy.
Flare-ups
Do you notice having flare-ups after being exposed to humidity or sweating excessively? Pityrosporum folliculitis is able to grow rapidly from humidity, sweat, oils, or close fitted clothing (like hats).
Acne medications don’t help
Acne medications (such as Benzoyl Peroxide) are simply not effective for treating Pityrosporum folliculitis—and will not put an end to your blemishes.
