Retinoids: Skincare Benefits
No matter what age you are, retinoids always make a great addition to your skincare regime. Find out why adding retinoids to your skincare is a wonderful idea!
What are Retinoids?
Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A to create a powerful skincare ingredient. Retinoids are prescription subscribed and retinols are sold over-the-counter. Retinoids and retinol differ because retinoids are more potent. Even though retinoids are more potent than retinols, you can still get results with retinols—it just takes more time.
Retinoids: Skincare Benefits
Boost collagen
Retinoids boost collagen, consequently making our skin look more healthy, plump, and smooth.
Exfoliates skin
Retinoids helps increase cell turnover. As a result, this helps remove dead skin, fade hyper pigmentation, and improve skin texture.
Reduces redness
Retinoids help reduce redness since it is an anti-inflammatory.
Control acne
Retinoids can help control acne by preventing dead cells to clog pores. On the contrary, some people can in fact breakout from using retinoids.
Things to keep in mind when using retinoids:
Approach with caution
It’s common for the skin to react to retinoids. Therefore, it is highly advised to gradually increase use to allow skin to adjust. However, if your skin continues to not react well with retinoids, it is advised to stop taking it.
Be patient (and consistent) for results
Typically, retinoids start to show noticeably changes after 12 weeks of using it.
Avoid applying near the eyes
Since the eye area is highly sensitive, avoid applying retinoid near or under the eyes.
Avoid the sun
Avoid applying retinoids when you are going out on the sun—retinoids increases the chance of sunburn.
Use a gentle moisturizer and cleanser
It is advised to use a gentle moisturizer and cleaner when using a retinoid to avoid skin irritation.
Do you use any skincare products with retinoid or retinol? If so, what products?
I use a retinol moisturiser but haven’t heard of retinoids… it definitely sounds like something I need to try out!
I’ve used quite a few things with Retinol A in it before, but I didn’t know there are also Retinoids. I haven’t heard of that one before. I’m guessing they are prescription only since they are so much stronger.
Wow I need to add this to my skincare routine. I have been looking for some new products to add.
I don’t think I have tried anything with Retinoids before. I am always caution when trying new things, as I seem to be allergic to everything but I am always willing to attempt!
Awe! Yeah I would definitely try a very small amount to see if your skin reacts to it!
I’ve never really known what Retinoids is, but now I do! Now, I think I would need it since I am getting older because it has a lot of great benefits!
I have been using a full body moisturizer with retinol in it. My elbows feel amazing! I never thought I would say that.
Oh wow, I need to do that 🙂
Such a great and informative article. I have been facing problems with acne lately, but I am going to keep this in mind – hopefully retinoids control my acne gradually!
Happy you found this helpful, Ria! You should definitely give this a try and see how your skin does 🙂
I’ve been debating on whether to try incorporating retinol and retinoids into my skincare routine or not and I probably just need to be educated more.
Happy I was able to give you some info 🙂
